Ocarinas and whistles

Drawing on our experience in terracotta and eager to expand our production, combining our social mission with local tradition, we have begun producing ocarinas according to the Emilian tradition.

Thanks to the support of the Municipality of Bentivoglio, we have therefore begun a productive collaboration with the Il Temporale Association of Bentivoglio and with Emiliano Bernagozzi, concert pianist, ocarina player and artistic director of the Gruppo Ocarinistico Budriese, today the most famous ocarina septet in the world.

In the classic Budrio style, the ocarinas we produce in our workshop are made of terracotta, created entirely by hand using plaster molds, which are assembled together to form the body of the instrument.

The blowing nozzle is then applied and the finger holes are made before firing, when the clay is leather hard, to proceed with an initial tuning which will then be perfected once the firing is complete.

Our production includes the following ocarinas:

Do1/1SC, Sol2/2SG, Do3/3AC Sol4/4AG, Do5/5BC, Sol6/6BG and Do7/7CBC.

The first three ocarinas average a range of an eleventh, while the larger ocarinas, namely the fourth through seventh, have a range of a ninth.

Through compound fingering it is possible to obtain the entire chromatic scale that lies between the lowest sound on the instrument, obtained by closing all the finger holes, and the highest sound, produced by blowing into the instrument with all the finger holes open.
